I’m the business developer for KONE Elevators & Escalators here in St. Louis as well as the Eastern half of MO, Southern IL, and Northwest IN. We’re a global company founded in 1910 with a presence in nearly every major market in the world. KONE manufactures, installs, maintains, and modernizes elevators, escalators, and autowalks. I joined SMPS last year and currently serve as the Sponsorship Chair.
What about SMPS do you find most appealing?
I love that SMPS provides a platform to network not only with prospects but also with other business developers and marketers. I’m always working on improving my strategies to cultivate business relationships and create and grow opportunities. I’ve found that there’s a common interest in improving our industry as well as a great culture of idea sharing within SMPS.
What did you like best about serving as the Sponsorship Chair?
It’s given me a chance to connect with more SMPS members than I think I otherwise would (even if I am asking them for money J). I like working toward a goal. Since part of the chapter’s success depends on sponsorship support, I know that each time we work with a sponsor, it gets us that much closer to meeting our objective.
What do you tell people is the main reasons to be a SMPS sponsor?
Get your company’s name out there in front of key decision makers with companies you may want to partner with! You’ll be glad you did.
Can you share with our members any networking or business development tips that have helped in your career?
These days, it seems like we’re all working all the time because it’s so important to stay connected and be available. Take advantage of the fun networking opportunities that come your way. It doesn’t feel like work when you’re enjoying yourself!
What is a good lesson you have learned the hard way?
When you have an idea, speak up! Don’t assume that something that’s obvious to you is obvious to everyone else. I once read that when you can bring value to a situation, you’re not doing yourself any favors by not sharing your expertise.
What might someone be surprised to know about you?
I love to travel! Some of the places I’ve spent time in are Dubai, New Zealand, Australia, Spain, Italy, England, Montenegro, Croatia, and Mexico. I’ve also visited 23 U.S. states and I plan to get to all 50.

Q. What do you see as the biggest benefit of being active in SMPS?
A. The biggest benefit of my involvement in SMPS has been the ability to build a network of contacts and resources for business development/marketing in the St. Louis AEC industry. The people I have met through planning SMPS Programs, being on the SMPS Board of Directors, and attending SMPS events have been invaluable to my professional and personal development.
Q. How long were you involved in SMPS until you really started becoming involved in the organization? A. And did something happen in particular that caused you to want to get more involved?
I immediately joined then accepted my current role as Programs Co-Chair. For me, getting involved in an organization is the best way to see true benefit to my membership. SMPS provided me with excellent opportunity to get involved in roles that suited my interests and strengths.
Q. Do you have a favorite SMPS event to date, and why?
A. My favorite SMPS events are the smaller-scale workshops. Last year, Jennifer Bradshaw and I hosted a presentation on Common Communication Errors in Business. The program organically evolved into an open forum discussion among professionals about issues and best practices in our industry. I left having learned a lot about firms and colleagues in our industry, and had new strategies to implement in my own work as well.
Q. Do you think that SMPS may be able to help you reach any of your career goals? If so, how?
A. SMPS already has helped me reach career goals. SMPS educational events have taught me invaluable skills about marketing research, technology and application. SMPS speaker series have helped me understand industry trends and learn about business development. Even the networking opportunities before and after programs have helped me make significant client and partner relationships. Being on the Board of Directors has helped me develop lasting friendships with industry professionals, as well.
Q. Is there any particular aspect of the AEC industry that you love the most?
A. I love the St. Louis AEC industry! Even as a larger city, St. Louis is a close-knit, family-like atmosphere that values integrity and hard work to make the infrastructure and facilities that lead to a prosperous community.
Q. What are three fun facts about Kristyn that you would be alright with letting the SMPS St. Louis community knowing?
A1. My husband and I are thrilled to be expecting our first child in January!
A2. I have the best dog in the entire world named Charlotte, she’s a red 80-lb pit bull.
A3. I’m a Missouri-licensed RE.

McCarthy Promotes Marketing Professionals Jessica Davila and Nora Bresnahan
McCarthy Building Companies, Inc. announces the promotions of Jessica Davila and Nora Bresnahan to Marketing Managers in the Central Division, reflecting McCarthy’s ongoing commitment to elevating its marketing expertise to meet client needs.
“As a company dedicated to sharing our specialized expertise and strong knowledge base, we are focused on strengthening our marketing team to better serve our clients,” said John Buescher, McCarthy Central Division President. “Jessica and Nora have consistently proven their commitment to McCarthy and our clients. Elevating their roles within the marketing team is a reflection of that commitment.”
As Marketing Manager for the Central Division’s healthcare business unit, Davila works closely with business development teams to manage pursuit efforts. Her responsibilities also include marketing research, public relations, event coordination, and additional marketing outreach. She joined McCarthy in early 2010 and has more than nine years of marketing experience in the construction industry. Davila currently serves as President of the St. Louis chapter of the Society for Marketing Professional Services (SMPS). She graduated from the University of Missouri with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication and a minor in French.
Bresnahan’s promotion to Marketing Manager recognizes her leadership in a range of marketing activities, including proposal development and strategy, marketing planning and research, public relations, database management, event coordination, marketing outreach and onboarding new marketing personnel. Bresnahan has 15 years of experience in the marketing and advertising industry and joined McCarthy in 2010. She graduated from the University of Missouri with a Bachelor of Journalism and is an active member of the Society for Marketing Professional Services (SMPS), serving on the St. Louis Chapter’s board for multiple years, including incoming Special Events Chair for 2016-2017.
Stacy Robben named Fellows of the Society
Stacy Robeen has been named as named a 2016 SMPS Fellows member. SMPS Fellows represent the highest level of experience and leadership in marketing and business development within the design and building industry. Members who have 15 years’ experience as a marketer and/or business developer in the A/E/C industry, have been an active member for 10 of the previous 15 consecutive years, and who have held a current Certified Professional Services Marketer (CPSM) designation for a minimum of five years were eligible to apply for the Fellows Recognition Program.
These professionals will serve as a resource at the chapter, regional, and Society levels to provide insight, ideas, programs, and mentoring. They also will be honored during the SMPS Awards Gala on August 11 as part of Build Business, the SMPS annual conference.

Buffy Fleming recently promoted to Marketing Manager:
Geotechnology, Inc. has named Buffy Flemming as the company’s Marketing Manager. In this role, Flemming will manage marketing activities company-wide, including efforts related to public relations, advertising, the company website, marketing materials and trade shows.
Flemming has been with Geotechnology since 2011, and as Marketing Coordinator has been instrumental in developing company branding efforts, establishing the Geotechnology intranet and social media involvement.

David Scarmana Receives the Ron Garikes Student Scholarship
The Society for Marketing Professional Services Foundation (SMPS Foundation) is pleased to announce it has awarded the 2015 Ron Garikes Student Scholarship to David J. Scarmana, of Richmond Heights, MO. Scarmana, a fourth-year student at Fontbonne University, is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in marketing with a minor in business administration with an anticipated graduation date of December 2015.
Scarmana received a $2,500 scholarship from the SMPS Foundation to assist with tuition and books for his final semester. Scarmana shared, “I couldn’t have been more excited when I was notified about the scholarship. In just a year’s time, I fully immersed myself in SMPS. I, along with Chris Oakes, helped charter the SMPS student chapter at Fontbonne University. I’m so thankful for all of the opportunities I’ve received from SMPS, and I look forward to being able to share my experiences with other students.”
The SMPS Foundation trustees reviewing the scholarship applications indicated that Scarmana was selected as the 2015 recipient because he “demonstrated a commitment to the A/E/C profession and organization while still in college, through involvement in making a student chapter of SMPS a reality. He has already utilized the educational programming from SMPS to advance his knowledge base. Because of SMPS, he now knows what he wants to do upon graduation after working part time for an architectural practice and as a result of his involvement in a society student chapter.”
