While only in its second year, the SMPS St. Louis Student Chapter at Fontbonne University is gaining momentum and generating interest from a wide range of students. Currently we have students ranging from freshman to seniors majoring in Marketing, Business Administration, Advertising, Accounting and Management. The underlying goal for many of these students is to gain professional experience by interning for a St. Louis area company.
Each month, we hold Student Chapter meetings at Fontbonne’s campus. The main focus for these meetings is to expose the students to the expansive world of the A/E/C industry. Since the majority of students aren’t familiar with this industry, these meetings are an excellent way to shed some light on what it is that we do. In addition to discussing topics related to the A/E/C field, we also accompany this with universal tips on career development.
One of our student members, Holly Rogers, was able to secure an internship during the first year of the SMPS Student Chapter at Fontbonne which has led to a part-time position with KRJ Marketing. Holly, who is majoring in Advertising, is the current SMPS Student Chapter President. In May, Holly was awarded with the annual SMPS St. Louis student scholarship.
Upon graduating from Fontbonne in December, I will continue to play an active role with SMPS as the Student Chapter Liaison. Having had such a great experience as a student member, my goal is to share what I’ve learned with other students that are still exploring various options for their career paths. I’m excited to see how the SMPS Student Chapter grows over time. If the first year and a half are any indication, it looks like this group has a very promising future.
