The Pinnacle Experience: A Truly Fresh Idea by Glen Cherry, CPSM, F.SAME

I’m now in my 40th year in the A/E/C business, and I have become quite selective about what I choose to spend my time and effort on in expanding my knowledge of the industry. As an SMPS member since 1991, and a past president of the SMPS St. Louis Chapter, I’ve been closely involved with planning and participating in programs and events designed to educate the member while offering quality networking opportunities.

So you can imagine my surprise when I found the Pinnacle Experience to be a real eye-opener! The topics were quite diverse, and frequent interaction among the speakers and those in the audience was very valuable. Michael Geary, SMPS CEO, and Dana Birkes, our Facilitator, quickly made it apparent to our group of 60 or so “seasoned veterans in the industry” that this was not going to be the usual conference experience.

Topics discussed included unique methods coping with the inevitable ups and downs of the marketplace; strategic marketing practices that allowed us to query our peers for their approaches for developing new business; cutting-edge digital technology trends that help deliver a differentiated customer experience; using unconventional marketing leadership to reach potential clients; using neuroscience to become a change-maker; and learning how Boeing’s HorizonX group develops new business. Wow—talk about edge-of-your-seat stuff!

I left the Experience with a new-found purpose: to evaluate and apply as many of these unique concepts as possible into my daily job as a business developer and marketer. I told Michael Geary after the event that this was one of the top five business development and marketing events I have attended. I look forward to seeing what I can learn at the next Pinnacle Experience!

The Pinnacle Experience
SMPS announced a new learning and networking event for our members and colleagues specifically designed for senior marketing leaders. The Pinnacle Experience, connecting marketing and business development leaders with the right content and conversations. A two-day symposium-style event, attendees engaged with content aligned with the current and emerging needs of marketing and business development decision-makers. Experienced professionals gathered to share perspectives and connect with other thought leaders, and presentations and discussions focused on strategic issues affecting the A/E/C industries. Pinnacle is intended for professionals with significant experience who serve as the “first chair” for leading their firm’s marketing efforts and includes CEOs, CMOs, directors, principals, vice presidents, and SMPS Fellows.
